Stóra Víti, which translates as “Big Hell,” is an enormous explosion crater within the Krafla volcanic system in northeastern Iceland. The crater is known for its turquoise-coloured lagoon and geothermal smoke rising from the hills surrounding it. The still water, embraced by steep crater walls, is truly a cinematic spectacle, serene and peaceful, especially when steam floats across the lagoon during the winter, creating a mystical atmosphere.

Climate

The region experiences a subarctic climate with cool summers and harsh winters, often seeing temperatures below freezing and substantial snowfall. The weather is unpredictable with frequent rainstorms and strong winds.

Accessibility

The area is accessible by vehicles, though a 4-wheel drive may be advisable due to rough terrain. Public transportation is limited, and cell phone coverage is generally good, but GPS may have intermittent issues due to atmospheric interference.

Basecamp and facilities

A medium/large parking lot is located just outside the crater, ideal for basecamps, but there are no facilities on-site for toilets or shelter, so all necessary equipment must be brought in.

Risk factors

The crater slopes are steep and can be slippery with loose volcanic material. The location is an active volcanic area that is regularly monitored, adding a layer of risk if safety precautions are ignored.

Visitors

Stóra Víti is a popular stop along the Diamond Circle route, attracting both tourists and locals who often hike to the top for panoramic views of the beautiful surrounding landscapes.
