Þórufoss is an 18-meter-tall waterfall hidden from the road in a canyon just 40 minutes from Reykjavík. The waterfall cascades in a single drop from a round cliff that stretches 30 meters. You can easily hike from the parking lot, a few hundred meters, and wade across the river to get up close and personal with the waterfall. Þórufoss was featured in Game of Thrones and in numerous TV commercials and films.

The weather in this region as in all Iceland is unpredictable and can change rapidly. It is common to experience all four seasons in one day. During summer months, the temperature can range from 10°C to 20°C. The winter months can be harsh with temperatures dropping as low as -10°C.

Basecamp and facilities

There is a medium-large parking lot just beside the top view of the waterfall. 500 meters up the main road, there is another large parking area that has been used as basecamp before. There are no facilities at this location. Phone coverage is excellent.

Risk factors

The area around the waterfall is slippery and the hike down to it is steep with loose rocks and boulders.

Visitors

The area is a low tourist attraction. With the right permit, the waterfall and the trail to it can be closed off.
