360° view

Þakgil is a spectacular place between Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the sand plains of Mýrdalssandur. The area is an untouched territory of high mountains covered in neon-green moss, with interesting forms and shapes of eroded sandstone that create a surreal and otherworldly landscape. Þakgil is a canyon 15 kilometres from the main road and offers an extraordinary landscape, nestled in a grassy valley, and shelter from the harsh winds that are usual to the area. The sandstone and tuff mountains are full of erosion formations, stacks, caves of various sizes, and beautiful waterfalls in many small ravines and canyons. Þakgil is a popular site for photographers because of the amazing contrast between the moss and the black or brown sandstone.
