Basecamp and facilities

The old gravel road that lies next to the canyon could be well suited as basecamp. There are at least three small lots as offshoots along the canyon but the best option for basecamp is at the end of the canyon by the Krókslón dam that has a big gravel lot. There are no facilities at this location and phone coverage is good.

Risk factors

The highlands can be a treacherous place. The roads vary from rough to impassable and travelling there in winter requires careful planning and specialized vehicles in some cases. The area is an active geothermal area with a versatile landscape. The canyon’s cliffs are eroded and very unstable.

Visitors

This is a medium tourist attraction during the summer months, with up to 130 thousand visitors driving through the area per year. Most stay for a few days and hike through the area, which has a plentiful of interesting hikes. The road that leads to the canyon is owned by a local energy company and, with the right permit, could be closed off for filming.
