15 minutes from Grindavík municipality lies an impressive and powerful geothermal field called Gunnuhver. It’s known for its impressive mud pools and steam vents that emit boiling water and sulfuric vapours but the powerful column of steam rising from Gunnuhver steals the show, reaching heights up to 20 meters and can be seen from faraway. The raw power of this location does not escape you and is mesmerising. The ground surrounding the hot spring is multi-coloured because of the mineral deposits that have been brought to the surface by the geothermal activity.
Accessibility
1.3 kilometres from the main road is the main entrance to the hot spring. From the other side there are 3.5 kilometres to a small parking lot. The location has boardwalks, so easy access to the spring from parking lots.

This location is 15 minutes from Grindavík municipality and close to Keflavík, so hotels, gas stations and convenience stores are in abundance. Nearest hospital is also in Keflavík.

Basecamp and facilities
There are two entrances to Gunnuhver area, one with a medium size parking lot and the other with smaller parking lot, only suitable for small tech base or offloading. There are several areas within 3 kilometres that could be used for larger basecamps. There are no facilities at the location.

Risk factors
The area poses significant dangers to visitors who don’t take proper precautions. The high temperatures of the water and steam can cause serious burns. The ground around the hot springs can be unstable, with a thin crust you could easily break through while walking and step into boiling water below. This area is extremely active, and the main vent can alter position with little notice, making this area unpredictable.
Visitors
The area is a high tourist attraction. Wooden boardwalks lie towards three viewpoints for the main vent. With the right permit, the area could be closed off or controlled with extra manpower and park rangers.
