Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland

A true nature marvel and incredible geological formations. These are 800 meters long, almost perfectly carved, basalt cliffs with hexagonal columns that reach a height of up to 14 meters, only 1500 meters from the main road. The pillars with an almost perfect geometrical symmetry will leave you standing below these magnificent cliffs speechless because of nature’s brilliance. The colour variations from black to greyish create a striking contrast against the surrounding landscape. You can easily walk 50 meters up a short slope towards the columns and choose your viewpoint. From each end of the cliffs, there is easy access by foot to the cliffs from above.

Basecamp and facilities

There is a lot next to the church, 500 meters further up the road from Gerðuberg Cliffs that could be used as a basecamp. Along the cliffs, there are two small gravel lots that could be used as tech bases or offloading. At the start of the road lies a small farm with fields that could be used as bigger basecamps if needed. There are no facilities at this location and phone coverage is excellent.

Risk factors

The basalt columns are broken and could fall. They are also slippery when wet and not suitable for climbing. The slope leading up to the cliffs is rocky, slippery and steep.

Visitors

The area is a medium tourist attraction. Visitors hike up to the columns or take a hiking tour around the area. Closing this location should not be a problem with appropriate permission and permit.
