Continental Slit

Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland

360° view

On the other side of the road from “The bridge between two continents” lies another fissure that is spectacular and otherworldly. The fissure is hidden from the main road and has two rock walls that lie parallel to each other along 300 meters. The cliffs are 10 to 15 meters high and the contrast between the dark, jagged cliffs and the smooth, black sand is striking and beautiful. The cliffs themselves are formed by tectonic activity, where the plates create deep cracks in the ground. Over time, erosion from wind and water has worn away at these cliffs, creating towering walls of rock.

This area needs a two-way permit.

Basecamp and facilities

Just beside the cliffs is a small area by the gravel road that can be used as tech base or a very small base camp. There are no facilities at this location. Phone coverage is excellent.

Risk factors

The cliffs are constantly exposed to weather and so the erosion continues, and large stones and boulders can fall from the walls onto the black sand below. The sand between the cliff is thick and tiresome to walk in.

Visitors

The area is a low tourist attraction. This area is also very popular with locals playing with mud motorcycles and 4-wheelers, so the area needs to be closed off for bigger productions.
