The road to Bláfjöll, Reykjavík’s ski resort area, is popular for various commercial shoots. It is situated in a beautiful volcanic landscape and winds through the area in perfect harmony, making the road picturesque and scenic. The stretch of road that is interesting as a shooting location is 8.5 kilometres long from route nr.1. It takes you through vast lava fields and an otherwise barren landscape, giving you a moon-like feeling driving through.

The weather in this region as in all Iceland is unpredictable and can change rapidly. It is common to experience all four seasons in one day. During summer months, the temperature can range from 10°C to 20°C. The winter months can be harsh with temperatures dropping as low as -10°C. Bláfjöll area is also very snowy region during winter months.

This area is owned by the government, Kópavogur and Hafnafjörður municipalities, so a three-way permit is needed to film here. A special permit is needed to close off the road for extended periods of time.

Basecamp and facilities

There is a large parking lot right at the beginning of the road, next to route nr.1. Also on the way are various little parking lots for small tech bases or smaller bases. At the end of this road, 2 kilometres ahead, is a ski resort that could be rented as holding, office or used as facility. The phone coverage is average.

Risk factors

During winter, this road gets very icy and covered in snow. The lava fields surrounding it are block lava with sharp edges and the area is also famous for lots of caves of various sizes, known and unknown.

Visitors

This area is very popular with the locals who take long hikes during summer, and ski during winter. There is also a big tourist attraction in the area that uses this road. It can easily be managed at traffic stops with intervals, with the right permit.
