The Keflavík Station or Naval Air Station Keflavik, commonly referred to as 'The Base,' was a military base of the United States Armed Forces and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) located on Miðnesheiði, near Keflavík Airport. The base was put into operation after Icelanders and Americans signed a defence agreement in 1951. Following the end of the Cold War, the number of soldiers at the base gradually decreased until the Americans formally left the station at the end of September 2006. By then, the base had been operational for 55 years. At its peak, there were 5,700 residents living on the base, making it one of the largest settlements in the country. Today, the area is known as Ásbrú and is part of Reykjanesbær. The neighbourhood is unlike other traditional Icelandic neighbourhoods, both in terms of the size of the buildings and architectural style, as it was designed with the needs of the military in mind. The area is very suitable for film shoots, offering easy access and ample space.
